Spotted cat animal facts. Many island populations have developed into a distinct sub-species. The smallest species of cat the rusty-spotted cat measures around 13 to 18 inches long and weighs between two and three-and-a-half pounds. Aside from being rare this species is also very shy which makes it even more surprising that two volunteers spotted these tiny animals wandering around a big-cat reserve. It sleeps during the day inside the hollow logs on the trees or among dense vegetation. Described as a washed-out smaller version of the leopard cat their more rusty colored tail measures about half the length of their body and is thick with less distinct spots. Rusty-spotted cat occasionally inhabits plantations and fields close to human settlements where it hunts poultry.
This species occurs in the dense moist forests of Tasmania and eastern Australia. The largest is the tiger. The body is slender body and smaller than a domestic cat.
They are smaller than a house cat and have a slender body. They mostly spend their days resting camouflaged in the trees or hiding in caves. When a leopard spots a potential meal it approaches with legs bent and head low so as not to be seen.
It is about half the size of the domestic cat. Some leopard cats have a single stripe running down their spine. Four blackish lines run over the eyes and two of them extend over the neck.
